Ablation Q & A

What causes abnormal bleeding?

Heavy periods happen to everyone from time to time. However, bleeding may be considered abnormal if you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms:

  • Long menstrual cycles (longer than 38 days)
  • Short menstrual cycles (shorter than 24 days)
  • Bleeding or spotting after sex
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • A menstrual cycle varying by more than 7-9 days.

An abnormal flow can happen at any age, but it’s more common if you’re over age 45. In addition, 20% of cases occur among teenagers.

If you’re experiencing heavy periods or some of the other symptoms listed above, it’s a good idea to call Palm Valley Women’s Care as soon as possible.

How is abnormal bleeding diagnosed?

Your provider at Palm Valley Women’s Care asks questions about the pattern of your bleeding. They perform a physical exam and recommend a blood test to look for signs of anemia and to measure your hormone levels.

To stop the bleeding, your provider often recommends a procedure called endometrial ablation.

How does endometrial ablation work?

Endometrial ablation is an outpatient procedure to destroy or remove your uterine lining, or endometrium. The method is generally effective at stopping excessive bleeding.

Your period may even completely go away.

What are my options for endometrial ablation?

Palm Valley Women’s Care offers two forms of endometrial ablation. The first option, the Genesys HTA™ System, uses heated saline solution to remove your uterine lining.

Your cervix is first slightly dilated, then your provider inserts a thin sheath. Heated saline goes through the sheath and circulates in your uterus, destroying the lining. Then your uterus is flushed with cool saline, and the sheath is removed. The entire treatment is brief, lasting about 10 minutes.

The second option is NovaSure®. This treatment uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to eliminate your uterine lining. Your provider dilates your cervix, inserting a slim wand containing a triangular mesh device. The mesh expands, fitting the size and shape of your uterus.

The mesh delivers precisely measured RF energy for about 90 seconds to remove your uterine lining. Your provider then retracts the mesh and removes the wand.
