daVinci Surgery Q & A

What is da Vinci surgery?

The da Vinci Surgical System offers a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. The FDA-approved robotic system allows your doctor to perform complex surgery with precision through small incisions.

In the past, doctors made large incisions through your skin and muscle to see clearly enough to perform surgery. Today, your doctor at Palm Valley Women’s Care instead performs many gynecologic procedures with the da Vinci technology.

The da Vinci system requires only a few small incisions. Your doctor inserts surgical equipment and a camera for viewing through the tiny cuts. Or, during laparoscopic surgery, a type of camera-assisted surgery, your doctor uses long-handled tools to perform the operation, while viewing magnified 3D images of your surgical area on a video screen.

What does da Vinci surgery treat?

The surgery is used for an array of gynecologic health problems, including:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Vaginal prolapse
  • Excessive menstrual bleeding

The system also can be used to perform a hysterectomy.

What are the advantages of da Vinci surgery?

Da Vinci surgery provides a number of potential benefits compared with other methods of gynecologic surgery. Benefits may include:

  • Significantly less pain after surgery
  • Less blood loss during surgery
  • Fewer surgical complications compared with open or laparoscopic surgery
  • Less scarring and fewer scars
  • A shorter hospital stay compared with open, vaginal, or laparoscopic surgery
  • A faster return to normal daily activities

In many cases, the robot-assisted surgery may provide you with a better outcome compared with conventional open surgery.

What should I ask my doctor about da Vinci surgery?

As you weigh your options, you may want to ask some of these questions:

  • What procedure is best for my medical condition?
  • How does da Vinci surgery compare with laparoscopic or open surgery?
  • How do I prepare for surgery?
  • What should I expect after surgery?

Your doctor at Palm Valley Women’s Care has a considerable amount of experience with da Vinci surgery and has performed surgery with the system for years. If you’re considering your options, da Vinci surgery might be a choice to consider. Find out more by calling Palm Valley Women’s Care.
