Obstetrics Q & A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is the field of medicine that focuses on prenatal care for you and your growing baby, and it includes pregnancy and delivery.

The team at Palm Valley Women’s Care offers obstetric care for both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies, and for women who may need a vaginal birth or a cesarean section (C-section).

What tests are part of obstetrics?

To help ensure your pregnancy progresses as it should, your provider recommends screening tests at certain stages of your pregnancy. These tests include:

  • First-trimester ultrasound: Performed around 6-12 weeks to assess the health of your pregnancy
  • Nuchal translucency ultrasound: Done at 12-14 weeks to look for signs of Down syndrome
  • Anatomy ultrasound: Performed at 18-20 weeks to assess your baby’s growth
  • Third-trimester ultrasound: A final check on your baby and the readiness for birth
  • Fetal non-stress test: A quick test often recommended for high-risk pregnancies

Your provider also may suggest other tests based on your pregnancy and the risk of complications.

What are my delivery options after a C-section?

Talk with your provider at Palm Valley Women’s Care about choosing between a repeat C-section or vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC).

VBAC is an option for many women. About 60-80% of women who try for a vaginal birth after a C-section have a successful vaginal delivery. The benefits of VBAC include:

  • Shorter recovery time
  • Lower risk of bleeding, infection, and other complications
  • More birth planning options
  • Avoid risks common with multiple C-sections, such as scarring
