Pregnancy Q & A

When should I see a doctor about my pregnancy?

If you didn’t get a chance to see your provider at Palm Valley Women’s Care for a pre-pregnancy check-up, make an appointment as soon as you find out you’re expecting.

Your doctor will want to go over important pregnancy topics, such as your medical history. If you suffer from conditions like diabetes, epilepsy, or high blood pressure, it’s important for your doctor to know this as early as possible. Together, you’ll also review:

  • Your general health, including diet, exercise, and tobacco use
  • Past pregnancies and deliveries
  • Any medications that you’re currently taking
  • Your immunizations
  • Advice on staying healthy during your pregnancy

If you’re not already taking prenatal vitamins, you’ll want to begin. These supplements contain folic acid and are packed with minerals and vitamins that your daily diet may not always include.

What kind of pregnancy care does Palm Valley Women’s Care offer?

The team at Palm Valley Women’s Care is experienced in caring for a range of pregnancies, from low-risk to high-risk. You can discuss with your provider the type of delivery you’d like, such as:

  • A standard vaginal delivery
  • Vaginal birth after C-section (VBAC)
  • C-section

Your provider at Palm Valley Women’s Care monitors you throughout your pregnancy to help you have the best outcome possible. The practice also offers weight management to help you bounce back after your pregnancy.

What tests do I need during pregnancy?

Your provider at Palm Valley Women’s Care recommends the appropriate tests and ultrasounds as needed to assess your health and that of your growing baby. This generally includes:

First-trimester ultrasound (6-12 weeks)

Assesses the location and health of your pregnancy. Your provider makes sure your baby has a normal heart rate and rhythm.

Nuchal translucency ultrasound (12-14 weeks)

This ultrasound measures the amount of fluid under the skin at the back of the baby’s neck. This measurement helps determine if the baby has Down syndrome.

Anatomy ultrasound (18-20 weeks)

This ultrasound assesses your baby from head to toe to make sure they’re growing properly. You also can find out your baby’s gender at this time.

Third-trimester ultrasound

Checks the health of your baby and readiness for birth. This ultrasound also estimates the weight of your baby.

Fetal non-stress test

A short, painless test to evaluate your baby’s health. Your provider recommends this test in the month leading up to your due date, if you’ve gone past your due date, or if you have a high-risk pregnancy.
